Foxhole Wood was the name of a 3-hectare part of an ancient woodland in the middle of Sheepstreet Lane in Etchingham, East Sussex. The woodland is 600 years old. Another part of it included the adjacent property, now called Robin Wood.
In 1962, this part of the woodland, including a 3-bedroom detached house, dating from the early 1920s, was purchased by Leo and Ilse Baker. Ilse was originally German and she was my father's eldest sister. Within a few years, a large studio with a veranda was added. The studio served as a studio for Leo, who painted and exhibited there.
From 1974 (when I was 15), I regularly visited Foxhole Wood and enjoyed the beautiful scenery and the very interesting conversations with my aunt and uncle. Leo died in 1989 (at the age of 86), but even after that, I often visited my aunt. The last time was in October 2006.
On December 3, 2006, my aunt Ilse passed away, and in the months and years that followed, the property was sold. The new owner demolished the old house and built a larger house. A year later, the entire 600-year-old wooded area was largely cleared, and the timber - mainly oak - was sold.
The residents of Sheepstreet Lane were unhappy with this development, because ancient woodland is regarded as important from an ecological point of view. The trees were cut down without permission.
The property was renamed Foxwood. It has now been sold again, and yoga classes are now held there by the current owners, in a separate building that has been built in the ground. That's why I wanted to keep the name Foxhole Wood and register it, in memory of what once belonged to our family: a beautiful place to stay with many memories. And for the animals (birds, badgers, bees and many more) it was a kind of paradise. There is nothing left of it except the name.
The company Foxhole Wood was founded in 2026 by Burkhard Weitz with the goal of providing musical education to young and old. This includes learning music notation, using software like MuseScore, supporting singers in rehearsing their parts, and teaching piano to both beginners and advanced students. All lessons take place in a homely atmosphere and are individually tailored to the individual and their existing knowledge.

Also check out my YouTube channel. It features piano pieces I've played and songs I've sung. There are also two videos of the Westfries Mannenkoor (West Frisian Men's Choir), which disbanded in March 2025 after its 80th anniversary. I was a member for 20 years and served on the board for 15 years, 12 of which as secretary and vice-chair.
I also recently wrote a book about my grandfather, Arthur Katzemich.
